There is a way to use Wi-Fi without installing a Wi-Fi router. Your computer must have a wireless adapter installed if you want to use WiFi. There is no need to buy a new router, a computer has built-in settings that let you build your own “Ad hoc” Wi-Fi network without having to use a router. Once you have set your Wi-Fi connection, the same connection can be shared by other Wi-Fi enabled devices such as smartphone, tablet, game consoles, mp3 players etc. Your Wi-Fi network must be password protected and make sure you don’t include any kind of personal information in the password.

Getting Wi-Fi internet without Wi-Fi Router

To access wifi internet without a wi-fi router, follow these simple steps.

Enable the Host Computer

  • Open Control Panel → Network and Internet Connections →Network Connections.
  • You will see your modem’s name, click it and then choose “properties.”
  • Select the “Advanced” tab check off “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection.” You need to uncheck the box saying “Allow other network users to control or disable this shared Internet connection.” Click “Ok.”
  • Finally click “Yes” when you are prompted to enable Internet sharing.

Create the Wi-Fi Network

  • Open Control Panel → Network and Internet Connections →Network Connections.
  • You will see your modem’s name on the page. Right click the name and choose “properties” from the list.
  • Select “Wireless Networks” and check the box saying “Add under preferred networks.” Choose a name for your connection under “SSID”.
  • Now you need to check off the box that says “This is a computer to computer network” and then uncheck “The key is provided for me automatically.”
  • You will select “Network Authentication” and then choose “Open.” And then click “WEP” from “Data Encryption.” Enter a strong password for the WEP key and then re-enter the same password in the second box. Click “Ok.”

Connect other Computers

  • Turn on a second computer in the vicinity of the host computer.
  • Check the bottom right side of the menu for the pop-up that notifies you of available connections.
  • The list of available Internet connections will appear by clicking on the “Network” icon on the tray. Locate the name of your Internet connections and click it and then enter password and press “Enter” button.
  • Launch your Internet browser and use Internet.
